The sap of the lacquer tree provides the basis for the natural type of lacquer (Urushi) of traditional Japanese lacquer art.
Several thin layers of colored Urushi are applied to the starting material. The lacquer customarily contains red or black pigments, but can also be processed using semi-transparent Urushi. Occasionally other materials, such as gold - or silver dust, sheet metal, mother-of-pearl or eggshell are embedded in the lacquer. The coating of Urushi has a unique luster and depth.
